Research to Practice Transit Symposium, October 12-14, 2021

The Symposium took take place on October 12-14, 2021, as a virtual event. This free, online event brought together transit experts to discuss the latest in public transportation research around the world. The central theme for this year’s symposium was translating transit research into practice. As the transit industry strives to Build Back Better after COVID-19, the symposium provided a platform where transit experts shared insights on how evidence-based research has been or can be translated into practice. In addition to discussions on transit research and practice in the U.S., a group of international speakers were invited to share transit insights from non-US contexts. Researchers and practitioners presented at the Symposium.

This year’s topics included:

  • Enhancing Transit Operations
  • Climate Change Resilience
  • Building Back Better
  • Spatial Mismatch of Workplace and Housing
  • Equity in Transit Operations
  • Digital Future and Connectivity
  • Transit Finance – COVID Impacts (Long-term), Zero Fare
  • Travel Trends after COVID
  • Transit’s Digital Future and Connectivity

This year’s event was built on the great success of the Interstate Transit Research Symposium held online in December 2020. The Interstate Transit Research Symposium featured many well-known experts in the field and drew hundreds of participants. The Symposium was convened by a partnership between APTA, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), University of Florida Transportation Institute, and the T-SCORE University Transportation Center.
