UFTI Faculty Member Promoted to Full Professor

Join us in congratulating UFTI faculty member Dr. Scott Washburn’s promotion to Full Professor!

Washburn has served as a faculty member in the Department of Civil and Coastal Engineering at the University of Florida since his appointment in August of 1999. From that time, he has advised more than a hundred students who have gone on to work in the private and public sectors of transportation. For the 2014-2015 school year, he was awarded for his excellence, innovation and effectiveness in advising and mentoring doctoral students with the College of Engineering Doctoral Dissertation Adviser/Mentoring Award.

Washburn’s areas of expertise include traffic flow theory, traffic operations analysis, traffic simulation model development and testing, development of traffic analysis and level of service computational methodologies and complementary software tools. His primary research efforts are aimed at improving and enhancing traffic analysis methods, particularly those contained in the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM), as well as developing better software tools for such analysis methods.

Washburn has been very actively involved with the Highway Capacity and Quality of Service Committee for the Transportation Research Board since 2001.  He served as a formal member from 2006-2016, and was chair of the User Laison Subcommittee (2010-2016) and chair of the Freeway/Multilane Highway Subcommittee (2006-2011).

In addition to authoring or co-authoring numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, Washburn is co-author of the best-selling textbook “Principles of Highway Engineering and Traffic Analysis”.

Washburn obtained his BSCE, MSCE, and Ph.D. degrees in civil engineering from the University of Washington. He has three years of professional consulting experience outside of academia, and is a registered professional engineer in the states of Washington and Florida.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to work at such a great institution and have the opportunity to collaborate with so many exceptional students, faculty colleagues, and numerous colleagues at agencies such as the Florida and U.S. Departments of Transportation,” he said. “These experiences have undoubtedly greatly contributed to my success at the University of Florida.”

Fellow department faculty members Kurt Gurley, Forrest Masters, and Alex Sheremet were also promoted to Full Professors.

“Each worked hard and were found deserving of the recognition and responsibility of this highly coveted promotion,” said Kirk Hatfield, director of the Engineering School of Sustainable Infrastructure and Environment (ESSIE).
