Ensuring the Sustainability of Prestressed Bridge Construction
In Florida, prestressed concrete is a very popular method for constructing bridges, but this method has its challenges because the steel strands inserted into the concrete corrode quickly, creating structural and safety issues. Protecting the steel tendons used in bridges and making sure the concrete will last for the intended life of the structure is what Dr. Trey Hamilton, a professor in the Structural Engineering group in the Department of Civil & Coastal Engineering at UF, and his team are working on. Technology Transfer

T2 Chosen to Update FDOT’s Asphalt Training Courses
Recently, FDOT was in need of updating their Construction Training Qualification Program asphalt courses, and they chose UF to complete the task. “As an instructor, it is good to know that you are presenting course material that helps the construction workers have the information they need to do their jobs better,” said Wayne Rilko, a project PI and course instructor with T2. McTrans Introduces TEF Webinar Series
McTrans premiered their newest webinar series last month and are offering the online sessions again this May: The Traffic Engineering Fundamentals Webinar Series.  The series is designed to offer both lecture and computer demonstrations for an introduction to various topics under Control, Safety and Capacity.  [read more]

Students and Staff Learn to “Harmonize Life” in a Busy World
The WTS Florida Gator Student Chapter at UF hosted a workshop titled “Harmonizing Life: Words, Work and the World Around Us”, which was presented by Marsha Anderson Bomar, a principal at Stantec. Anderson Bomar spoke to students and staff on how to find the right employer-employee relationship to maximize career success and provided suggestions and advice on how to find mentors to help individuals advance within an organization. She also spoke about family and women’s issues, learning to live with less sleep, building a support network and learning to ask for help. [read more]

UFTI’s STRIDE Center Co-sponsors UTC Conference in the Southeast, which Brings Together Academics, Private & Public Officials
More than 130 people attended the 2015 UTC Conference for the Southeastern Region held at the Hyatt Regency, Wynfrey hotel in Birmingham, Ala., on March 26 and 27, 2015.The Keynote Speaker was Michael F. Trentacoste, who serves as the FHWA Associate Administrator for Research, Development and Training and who is the director of the Turner Fairbank Highway Research Center.
