Biography

Tom Byron, P.E., was appointed Assistant Secretary of Strategic Development (formerly Intermodal Systems Development) for the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) in March of 2016. Prior to that, Tom served as Chief Engineer since December 2011.  As Chief Engineer, Tom was responsible for the Offices of Construction, Maintenance, Materials, Research, Traffic Operations, Design, Right of Way and Program Management. Tom served FDOT in various positions since November 1995 at both the State Materials Office and District 2 Materials Office. He has worked in areas of Corrosion Research, District 2 Concrete Engineer, Pavement Systems Research, Pavement Evaluation, and Structural Materials. Tom served as a Colonel in the United States Marine Corps in both active and reserve capacities. He has been mobilized twice and deployed to the Middle East to participate in aviation command and control activities in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere. During his time in the Marine Corps, he served in multiple command and director level positions within the Marine Corps, the US Air Force and in overseas coalition Headquarters. He was retired with 30 years of service. Tom is currently the business director for the transportation unit at MTX Group, Inc.
