McTrans Center Secures National Academies of Sciences Contract to Enhance, Maintain HCM Volume 4 Website

By Fabio Sasahara, Ph.D., McTrans

The McTrans Center was recently awarded a contract by the National Academy of Sciences to provide web hosting, maintenance, and upgrades to the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) Volume 4 website.

HCM Volume 4 is a free online resource that is part of the Highway Capacity Manual, although it is not sold in a printed volume with the other volumes (1 through 3). It includes:

  • Supplemental chapters 25-38, providing additional details of the methodologies described in the Volume 1-3 chapters, as well as example problems and other resources.
  • A technical reference library providing access to a significant portion of the research supporting HCM methods.
  • Two application guides demonstrate how the HCM can be applied to planning-level analysis and a variety of traffic operations applications.
Interpretations, updates, and errata for the HCM (as they are developed).
  • A discussion forum allowing HCM users to ask questions and collaborate on HCM-related matters.
  • Notifications of chapter updates, active discussions, and more via an optional e-mail notification feature.

The scope of the contract also includes support for the peer-review process for updates of future HCM chapters in cooperation with the subject matter experts at the Highway Capacity and Quality of Service Committee (ACP40) at TRB. This process ensures that any additions to the Highway Capacity Manual are thoroughly reviewed and approved by this standing committee.

Finally, McTrans will also support the editorial process for the printed and eBook versions of the HCM after new chapters are approved by the Highway Capacity and Quality of Service Committee.

This ongoing work adds to the already extensive list of UFTI’s contributions to the development of the Highway Capacity Manual. You can browse the complete list here.
