Biography:

Pruthvi Manjunatha is the I-STREET Testbed Manager and a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Coastal Engineering. Dr. Manjunatha has 8 years of experience in transportation engineering, which includes teaching, research and working in the industry.  His experience has been in Connected and Autonomous Vehicle (CAV) infrastructure, Human Factors and Driver Behavior, Traffic Simulation, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), traffic operations and data management. Dr. Manjunatha completed his Master’s thesis on a German Academic Scholarship at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and received his Master’s degree in Transportation Systems Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. After getting his Ph.D. from the University of Florida (UF) in 2018, he briefly worked as a post-doctoral associate.

In his current role as I-STREET Testbed Manager at the UF Transportation Institute (UFTI) he co-ordinates with the City of Gainesville and Florida Department of Transportation in the planning and implementation of I-STREET projects. He works with project PIs and industry partners to coordinate software, hardware and application efforts and ensures consistency and interoperability of various components. He develops proposals and works on grants related to the testbed development. He also writes project reports, journal articles, and manages data collection and data analysis efforts. He supervises the work of graduate and under-graduate students and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in Transportation engineering.

Current Projects:

Extended Development and Testing of Optimized Signal Control with CAVs: As part of an NSF grant UFTI has developed, evaluated, and deployed an intelligent real-time intersection traffic control system that is able to simultaneously optimize signal control and automated vehicle trajectories, considering the presence of autonomous, connected, and conventional vehicles in the traffic stream. This project funded by FDOT will extend the system to include pedestrians, bicyclists and scooters.

Transportation Mobility Assessment and Recommendations for Smart City Planning: Objective of this project is to develop and test a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) methodology for developing transportation mobility plans by assessing the needs of travelers in the community. Two communities in Gainesville with different demographic characteristics (affluent, high educated, car-centric Haile Plantation and low-income, working class, transit dependent Duval Heights) have been chosen for this study.

Before-After Study of Pedestrian-Bicyclists Gainesville Connected Vehicle Pilot: As a part of AID project, warning or notification systems to improve pedestrian-bicyclist access and safety will be deployed at UF campus. This study evaluates the system performance in terms of safety and mobility at intersections and mid-block crossings of the selected campus routes.

Data Analytics and Evaluation of the Gainesville Trapezium Connected Vehicle Signal Phase and Timing (SPaT) Deployment Project: As part of the I-STREET and FDOT’s CAV program, Siemens Mobility will deploy Road-Side Units (RSUs) capable of Direct Short Range Communications (DSRC) on four roads surrounding the campus (forming a “trapezium”). This project evaluates the efficacy of DSRC in improving safety and efficiency using crash data, “near-miss” detection and traffic performance measures.

Evaluation of Advanced Vehicle and Communication Technologies using Microsimulation: The goal of this project is to develop a robust microsimulation extension to allow the development and refinement of advanced transportation management strategies and evaluation procedures considering the presence of connected and autonomous vehicles. The research considers the effects of the utilization of combinations of mobile and infrastructure devices to support these strategies. It also considers both mobility and environmental impacts.
