UF GatorITE Chapter Wins Multiple Awards at Annual FSITE Meeting

The GatorITE Chapter won several awards for students at the Annual FSITE Meeting. These awards included the Best Student Chapter Award, the Bill McGrath Scholaraship Award, 1st Place for the Research and Shark Tank Award, and the Put a Break on Fatalities Social Media Contest.
  • Best Student Chapter Award – University of Florida: The purpose of the Student Chapter Award is to recognize Student Chapters with outstanding accomplishments: “to promote the advancement of transportation and traffic engineering by fostering the close association of students with the transportation and traffic engineering profession and ITE; to acquaint Chapter Members with topics of interest in transportation and traffic engineering through the medium of addresses by competent speakers, and of Chapter‐sponsored trips; to foster the development of professional spirit; to promote common interests among Chapter members; and to encourage the expansion of facilities for transportation and traffic engineering study.”
  • Bill McGrath Scholarship Award – Fabio Sasahara: FSITE annually awards the William R. McGrath Transportation Scholarship to further the educational pursuits of an outstanding student. Bill was very active in ITE at both the Florida Section and International levels. He passed away in 1999 passed away on February 22, 1999 at the age of 76. Bill and his wife Joyce had 11 children, plus 11 additional foster children.
  • 1st Place – Research and Shark Tank Award- Aschkan Omidvar: A traditional poster competition, which this year included for the first time a combined Shark Tank competition. Students presented their posters as in the past, but also had to present a 5-minute “pitch” of their research to a distinguished panel of members/officers (just like in the Shark Tank TV Show). The sharks (judges) scored the poster and presentation to determine the overall winner.
  • Put a Brake on Fatalities Social Media Contest – Most creative post – University of Florida: FIU-ITE Student Chapter, in collaboration with FSITE, conducted a social media contest between the ITE Student Chapters in District 10 to promote and support the efforts of reducing traffic crash fatalities. ITE Student Chapters around Florida were encouraged to share safety-related content on social media for a 10-day period. Awards were presented to the chapter with the highest number of shares and to most creative posts.
