UFTI organized a half-day workshop on “Visualizing Transportation Big Data for Efficient Decision Making” on Friday, December 8. Despite the sudden bad weather, about 30 people attended the event in person, in addition to a handful of virtual participants who logged into a Zoom meeting to follow the presentations. April Blackburn, Chief of Transportation Technology, FDOT, spoke first; her topic was data governance and FDOT initiatives to date. Dr. Natalia Ruiz Juri, Director of the Network Modeling Center (NMC), UT Austin, shared recent and ongoing efforts in Austin, Texas, on private-public joint engagements in the analysis of emerging data streams. Dr. Catherine Lawson, Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and Planning, University at Albany, was the third speaker; she provided several examples of visualization efforts undertaken at the Albany Visualization and Informatics Labs (AVAIL). Finally, Dr. Ilir Bejleri, Associate Professor, and Dr. Sanjay Ranka, Professor, both from the University of Florida, provided an overview of UF efforts on visualizing transportation data on maps by discussing traditional and emerging GIS tools.
